Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition party leader Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga and his daughter were on the spot on March 20th, 2023 after their vehicles were allegedly hit by a teargas canister. According to Azimio‘s South African chapter, the group alleged that there was an assassination attempt on Raila and his daughter before and during the March 20 demonstrations.

Further, the international group claimed that the assassination plot was allegedly planned by senior government officials.

“Azimio chapter has learned with shock the attempts to assassinate Raila Odinga and his daughter Winnie Odinga during a peaceful demonstration against President William Ruto’s administration,” the report said in some parts.

According to the group’s report, the assassination plots were allegedly made simultaneously but from different locations. The group alleged that uniformed police officers were given the mandate to carry out the assassination plot.

“Uniformed police officers attempted to carry out these two separate assassinations by lobbying teargas canisters at the vehicles of both Raila and Winnie as they were leaving Serena hotel,” the group claimed.

The Azimio South African chapter alleged it was an assassination attempt since the tear gas canisters were shot at the left side of the vehicle, broke the windscreens and, entered inside the cars.

“It cannot be a coincidence that both teargas canisters were fired from the front and directed on the left side of the two vehicles, broke the windscreens and penetrated inside the car.” The group alleged.

The group is now calling on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to carry out their investigations on the alleged assassination plot. While in Nakuru, Raila alleged that Ruto’s government wanted to assassinate him.

“You can assassinate Raila Odinga physically but you cannot assassinate his ideas or what he stands for,” Odinga said during the Nakuru anti-Ruto rallies.
