There is unrest at Maseno University today evening after a student identified as William Mayenga was allegedly shot dead on the chest by a female police officer during the day.
The sad incident occured as police were trying to contain chaos at the institution during the anti Kenya Kwanza Government protests. The protests were held across the country especially in the Nairobi Central business District (CBD) due to high costs of goods and services plus heavy taxation which has affected the standards of living of citizens.
The students also extended the protests to the Busia-Kisumu highway to show their support for Azimio leader Raila Odinga. Images shared online showed police using teargas canisters to disperse the protesting students who had made the highway impassable.
In a bizzare video shared online, William Mayenga was lying on the ground bleeding profusely as the other students panicked and tried holding the wound to prevent more bleeding but sadly, it was too late. Others tried calling for an ambulance amid the panic state.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital on a motorbike in a critical state but sadly succumbed to the injuries.
William Mayenga was a third year Bachelor of Education (English and literature) student.
The sad incident was confirmed by University Alumni Association Secretary General William Muga who revealed that the students who were at the scene were able to identify the rogue officer who was conspicuous among her colleagues.
Maseno University administration is yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the painful incident. The family of the student has also not yet spoken to the media following the tragic death.
May God comfort the family members and friends of the late student. Our sincere condolences to the Maseno University fraternity.
