Celebrated Kenyan artist Nadia Mukami on Tuesday stirred a debate online after claiming to be the best songwriter of this generation.
Taking to social media to explain her stance, Nadia posted a caption on Twitter that read, “I am the Best Songwriter/ Lyricist of this Generation!!” In addition, she posed a question due to what she termed as lack of songwriter awards in the country, “Why Don’t we have a songwriter of the Year in Awards!!? We need to shift Focus to The Power of the Pen!!?”
The statement sparked controversy on various social media platforms as fans shared their views in regards to her statement. Some fans agreed with her statements and tried to justify their opinions.
One Twitter user posted a tweet in support which read, “Nadia Mukami is right you know. It’s about time we also celebrate songwriters in Kenya. Truth is, not all songwriters can sing and not all musicians can write hit songs.. We should appreciate them all.”
On the other hand, some fans disagreed with her stance. One Twitter user disagreed by stating that Nadia was good but not good enough in her opinion, “One thing we all agree Nadia Mukami is doing great musical compared to any female artist, but she ain’t the BEST. Jovial beats her lyrical, vocals, and diversity.”
To conclude the discussion, Nadia expounded on her stance and stood her ground by asking for an award for best songwriter categories. “I am happy to have sparked a Conversation on Songwriting! Am trending. Am calling upon all Award Shows to have a Category on Songwriter of the Year! Do you know that so many Songwriters are Not even Singers!! Let’s create a Norm of appreciating them!! Tag all award shows!!!” she posted on her official Twitter handle.
