The government through Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has responded to reports that Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula’s brother, Tony Waswa, may have died of the deadly Covid-19.

Speaking to the press outside Afya House, Kagwe Kagwe was asked whether the Senator may have been exposed and whether he would put his colleagues at risk in case his brother died of Coronavirus.

Responding, he noted that he could not ascertain until contact tracing was done, highly suggesting that Waswa could have died of Covid-19.

Deviating from the question, said that health officials would further investigate the issue.

“We cannot respond to that question until we have done the contact tracing [to establish whether Waswa’s contact persons were exposed to coronavirus or not], and indeed certified that what you are saying [that Tony Waswa died of coronavirus] is correct,” – Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe

Waswa was laid to rest on Wednesday, May 20, at his Kabuchai family homestead in Bungoma County.

The family had last week announced Waswa as having died at the Aga Khan Hospital where he was being treated for a “short illness”.

Bungoma County health workers who attended the burial, wore hazmat suits and backpack sprayers, which they used to sanitize the casket of the departed, raising questions on whether he succumbed to Coronavirus.

Another Covid-19 burial procedure that was adhered to was wrapping the coffin in a sheet of translucent polythene.

Waswa’s burial ceremony reportedly lasted less than 15 minutes.

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi who is also a brother to Waswa was taken into quarantine immediately after the burial.

The 47-year-old leaves behind a wife, Tina Musili, and four children: Dustine Waswa, Rye Waswa, Pauline Waswa, and Daniel Waswa.

Until the time of his demise, Waswa worked as Tim Wanyonyi’s assistant.

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula’s daughter Sheila Wetangula on Wednesday afternoon all but confirmed that her uncle Tony Waswa had died of Corona.

Through a Facebook post, Sheila confirmed that the late Waswa was among the 50 who have died from COVID-19 in Kenya.

“Tony I remember you would give me anything I needed. COVID you are an a**h*le. You robbed me, family,” she wrote.
