A recently released report has ranked fried chicken as the most popular food bought through various online based fast food vending platforms.

The Jumia Food Index Report 2019 launched on Tuesday, December 3, listed pizza in the second place while burgers grabbed the third position in the latest ranking.

Jumia Food Kenya On-Demand Services, Managing Director East Africa, Shreenal Ruparelia, said the statistics gathered over the last seven years, indicated that drivers for the growth for food deliveries are affordability, awareness and geographic availability.

“Breakfast and lunch are becoming more popular with the former, having grown to 4.6% in 2019 compared to 3.8% in 2017. Lunch is at 41.1% in 2019 up from 36.2% in 2017” said Ruparelia.

Ruparelia said this was attributed to restaurants increasingly offering meals at lower prices of up to below KSh 300. She, however, noted dinner deliveries dropped from 60% in 2017 to 54.2% in 2019.

The Jumia Food Index report also indicated taste profiles are different in different cities in Kenya.

In Nairobi, chicken, pizza and burger were cited as the most popular items while in Mombasa, customers preferred continental followed by chicken and pizza.

“Our statistics revealed something special about Nakuru as we found that Chinese food seemed to be the most popular cuisine,” noted Ruparelia.

For 2020, the Jumia Food Index report, predicts a 50% increase in On-Demand deliveries on the back of a continuation of more affordable menu items, enhanced availability of popular vendors, increased mobile coverage and a growing awareness of the convenience.

“2020 is poised for strong growth in On-Demand deliveries of non-restaurant items such as groceries, pharma products, alcohols and other on-demand categories such as cosmetics, gifting and flowers,” stated Shreenal.
