Manchester United youngster Axel Tuanzebe was left elated after captaining Manchester United during the Carabao Cup match against Rochdale on Tuesday night, a match United won through post-match penalties.
The United youth team prodigy was named the captain of the day at the expense of senior players like Paul Pogba, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero, and Juan Mata.
He led his boyhood club down the tunnel, something he says is a dream come true. The player has previously skippered United in all the age-group categories.
“Dreams do come true. I had goosebumps as I was walking out. It is something I have been working on for a long time and the moment finally came. I am just grateful to the manager and grateful to the club and the players I am playing with for sharing this moment with me,” he said.
The 21-year old also revealed that he had not been informed earlier that he would be captaining the team and learned of it moments to kick off.
“It was a nice surprise. I was literally getting ready to stretch and loosen up and Mike Phelan just came to me and said ‘are you ready to go and see the referee. I said ‘what do you mean?’ and he said, ‘Come on you are captain’. So I said ‘alright, let’s get it’,” he added.
Axel will be hoping to cement his place in the first team.
