Pupils at Gitwebe Primary School in North Mugirango constituency, Nyamira County on Tuesday escaped death narrowly after the roofs, doors and windows of their classrooms were blown off by strong winds.

The School’s Deputy Headteacher Eunice Nyarango, decried the facility’s dilapidated classes saying that the 150 pupils were lucky that the incident occurred after they had left for home in the evening.

Nyarango explained that strong winds have been a threat to the children’s safety for a while now.

“When it is about to rain, we are forced to release the pupils to their homes as we did ahead of this incident to prevent tragedies,” Said Nyarango.

Gitwebe’s School Board Chairman Simeon Nyangacha said that learning activities are now being held under trees.

The school’s chaplain Zephaniah Omboto remarked that fear has engulfed the entire school as other classrooms too are at risk of collapsing in the event of strong winds.

Three classrooms and one office were affected in the incident which came barely a day after eight pupils lost their lives while several others escaped with injuries at Precious Talents School in Nairobi following the collapse of their classroom walls.

On Monday, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha pledged to build a new school for Ng’ando residents after a tragedy occurred at Precious Talent Academy.
