Reprieve at last. Gor Mahia have finally announced their departure to Algeria for their CAF Champions league battle against USM Alger, after a major stalemate which rocked the club following the license suspension of betting firm SportPesa. Sportpesa has been KÓgalo’s sponsor since 2016.

The Kenyan representatives in the continental showpiece have confirmed, via their official social media page, that their flight will take off on Friday night ahead of the Sunday clash. “Team Update. The team (Gor Mahia) will depart for Algeria aboard Qatar airways at Midnight,” they posted.

Initially, the Kenyan Premier League giants had their fate pegged on the government support following a failed fundraiser held earlier in the week. The Harambee had yielded only Sh1.3 million, over sh3 million less than their target for the trip. Chairman Ambrose Rachier had hinted at a possibility of bowing out of the tournament if they failed to book their flight today.

“We shall be leaving on Friday but I can’t tell the time, because we are not sure when the tickets we have been promised will be ready. We intend to reach Algeria on Saturday in readiness for the Sunday match. As at now we still don’t have money, things have been hard and we are relying on the government’s promise. We are sure they won’t let us down,” he had said, as was quoted by Nation.
