There was drama in Baringo County, on Wednesday, after a section of youth scrambled for spilt illicit brews during an operation by the security apparatus.

The drunkard youth from the sub-county of Eldama Ravine could be seen crouching to sip the flowing brew, a mixture of Changaa and Kangara, which was poured down by security officers after they raided the village.

The ‘mad’ youths could be heard saying the liquor was so sweet to let it go.

Woyaneei, makitortoi maiywa, kiyoen tumin (it’s not good to pour down liquor, they are used for cultural rituals),” one of them was heard murmuring in local Kalenjin dialect as he hurriedly bent down to sip from the already flowing ‘stream’.

The operation, which was led by Baringo County Commissioner Henry Wafula and County Police Commandant Robinson Ndiwa, saw the destruction of brewing equipment including metallic drums and jerricans.

It included 35,000 litres of kangara, 3,000 litres of chang’aa and 4,000 litres of busaa which were loaded in containers.

Speaking while overseeing the destruction of the seized brews in Ravine stadium, the area OCPD, Rashid Mohammed, spoke on the challenges they undergo while meandering across remote villages to whip out the liquor.

He revealed that his officers were facing an uphill task in their eradication adding that brewers and rogue drunkards had even confronted them with deadly threats.

“In most of the time, the brewers threaten that they will do unknown bad things to us including our wives and children, for interfering with their business”, stated Rashid.

Rashid pointed out at notorious villages of Kurusslal (valley of death) and Shauri Yako near Kap Denning, as the most dangerous and leading producers of changaa and kangara ‘juice’ in the region.

County commissioner Henry Wafula warned the community against threatening security officers noting they would be dealt with accordingly.

Wafula maintained that the operation will continue until they bring to an end the sale and brewing of illicit liquor in the area and also in the entire county.

In the said sub-county, nearly 70% of the residents have been affected by the harmful brews which have rendered most of them poor.

There are also concerns that a large percentage of the drunkard men cannot perform their marital duties, something that has broken many marriages in the area.
