Ethic: Kenya’s music sensation
Without doubt, Ethic is one of the biggest breakout groups to emerge in Kenya’s music scene in 2018. Comprising Rekles, Swat, Zilla and Seska as members, the outfit surged onto the spotlight with the insanely famous hit song “Lamba Lolo” in mid 2018. This was followed closely by the release of “Position” featuring The Kansoul, and “Saba”. In 2019, the quartet has already released a bona fide club banger titled “Instagram”.
Coke Studio Experience
Ethic make their debut on Coke Studio Africa this year performing alongside Nigerian Afrobeat singer Mr. Eazi – and produced by Young DLC from Zimbabwe. Speaking about their experience on the show, Seska says: “It’s such a good feeling, everyone [artists] would love to have this kind of an experience. It is also a source of inspiration for artists who are coming up.”
They term their collaboration with Mr. Eazi as inconceivable. Rekles says: “It’s such a big deal for us, when we started this [music], no one thought we could get to a point where we would collabo with such a big artist in Africa. Big up Coke Studio for making this happen, they have really come through for us.”
The “Lamba Lolo” success story
The group has captured the hearts of music fans across Kenya since the release of their debut single and has shared the stage with some of the top global acts including Nasty C and Chronixx in 2018. With “Lamba Lolo” hitting close to 3 million views on YouTube in just under a year, the group grabbed the attention of African stars such as Skales and Krizbeatz who have expressed their interest in working with them. The young musicians attribute the success of the song to the fact that it is relatable: “Our songs represent the hood. Since most people live in the hood that is why the song trended on the streets,” according to Swat.
With their music career just kicking off, the group expresses their commitment to their fans: “We won’t get tired of impressing our fans, they build us and we can’t let them down,” Seska says. “There are more entertainment projects and hits coming up.”.
Having started their music careers as individual artists, Ethic came together to release “Lamba Lolo” which was their first track as a group. Zilla says: “Some of us like Seska and Rekles schooled together so we have known each other for a while but decided to start performing and recording together as a group because we are all talented.” The young talents have collectively drawn inspiration from a variety of artists covering different genres ranging from hip hop to dancehall; among them Khaligraph Jones, Vybz Kartel, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Their final sentiment to artists who are coming up, in the words of Rekles: “Don’t get tired or give up. If your passion is there, your big break is there. It was not easy when we started and it’s taken a lot of hard work to get here.”
